If you watched the program that aired after TG today. You might be interested in this. The Urang-Utan's take on who was at fault in basically killing the British Car Industry.

That was really good. It's a shame what has happened to their car industry.

What? That it got taken over by people who were actually good at running car companies, and now makes more cars (by value and volume, if I remember rightly) than in the 'heyday' of the British car industry?

It's a shame they weren't able to turn it around on their own and retain a domestic car industry. I know they are still based in England, but it changes your view (at least for me) a little. It would be like buying an American flag made in China.

Exactly! Don't underestimate national pride. I, as a German, drive a car that was made in Britain. And I love it! But it wasn't made by a British owned company.
While the segment of today's Top Gear may come off as a bit of a circle-jerk, it may have just been what they needed. A little massage to a nations ego, a quick remimder that they still build stuff.

Companies like VW are owned by investors from all over the world, these days.

In general, it's hard to be too harsh in one's criticism of the way the British car industry was all-but destroyed by a combination of labour relations issues and government interference - but since the government has kept its fingers largely off in the last few decades the industry has recovered to the extent that it's hard to say anything was really lost.

No point in me repeating myself - the reply took your comment into account as well.

Good points. I just wrote this http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/engineering-de… . Do you think cars are engineered to follow a national stereotype of how people view them?
